FAQ

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes, Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind just as sleep is natural. We actually all naturally experience some form of hypnosis every day. It occurs between being fully awake and fully asleep.

What does it feel like?

Being in hypnosis is a very pleasant, comfortable, relaxing feeling. It has also been described as like a day dream or similar to just before you drift off to sleep. Others simply just feel more relaxed than before hypnosis. The therapy part of hypnosis is experienced differently by everyone, as it is personal to them and dependant on their treatment. It is only afterward when you experience the positive changes that you will truly ‘know’ you were hypnotised.

Will I be unconscious or sleeping?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about hypnosis. You will not be unconscious, nor will you be asleep. It is an altered state of consciousness.

Am still aware when in Hypnosis?
Yes. People are completely aware. They are able to hear what is being said, if an emergency vehicle with sirens on came past, they would still hear this.

It is also said to be a much higher awareness than the normal waking state, with the ability to focus on the task at hand.

Will you be able to control me?

The appearance of control in stage hypnosis is due to a combination of different factors. The first and main one, is the participant wants to be part of a show. Other factors are stagecraft, participant selection, psychological suggestibility and physical manipulation.

Is it sometimes difficult to wake up from hypnosis?
No. There is a deep state of hypnosis that people sometimes feel so comfortable in that they do not want to emerge. However the trained hypnotherapy practitioner knows exactly how to emerge from this type hypnosis.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

There are different trails of thought on this matter. As hypnosis is a natural state then the obvious answer is YES. However, other schools of thought believe that about 10% of the population can not be hypnotised.  Again, there are other ideas about levels and depth of hypnosis.  Generally speaking people who are not suffering from any mental health issues (eg. Some learning difficulties, psychosis etc) and can concentrate should be able to achieve a hypnotic trance state. However, you must be willing and want to be hypnotised, you can not be hypnotised against your will.
